Angel Tree

The CUMC angel tree is back this year. This is part of our annual work to provide Christmas cheer to children of incarcerated parents. Without our gifts, these children would not have the merry Christmas so many others take for granted. Please take an angel from the tree, purchase a gift for the child, and then bring the present to the church with the angel tag attached. Gifts need to be returned by Sunday, December 21st. Thank you!

Bell Ringing for the Salvation Army

The United Methodist Men have once again organized a bell-ringing day to help collect coins and dollars for the charities supported by the Salvation Army. We need ringers to volunteer for Saturday, December 20th to attend the kettle at the Wal-Mart in Princeton. If you would like to participate, contact the church office and ask for Jerry Beasley.

Christmas Eve Service of Lessons and Carols

The people of Concord United Methodist Church continue our Christmas tradition of offering a Candlelight Service of Lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve, December 24th at 11:00pm. All are invited to join us for hymns and scripture passages especially appropriate for celebrating this special holiday.

Seeking Church Organist/Pianist

Concord United Methodist Church is seeking an organist (or pianist) beginning January 2009. The musician must be available each Wednesday evening from 6:30pm to 8:00pm and each Sunday morning from 10:30am until noon. For more information, interested individuals may call the church office at 304- 384-7922, the pastor at 304-384-9639, or the chairperson of the search committee at 304-384-9170.

December Apportionment Challenge

This month, the church has found a unique way to meet our apportionment goals with a special challenge. For the month of December, every individual contribution to meeting the church's apportionment goals will be matched dollar for dollar. That means if you contribute $100, it will be matched with another $100 for a total contribution of $200. Last spring, we set a goal of meeting our apportionments 100% in our 150th year of ministry. We are in reach of this goal. Let us finish the task.

Christmas Dedications

In keeping with our tradition at Concord, a Christmas Dedication may be placed in the bulletin to appear on Sunday, December 21st. A dedication with a poinsettia plant is $25. A dedication without a poinsettia is $10. You may place a dedication in honor, in loving memory, or to the glory of God. If you request a dedication with a poinsettia, please be sure to pick up your plant following our worship service on December 21st. All proceeds from the 2008 Christmas Dedications will be directed to the Concord United Methodist Church General Fund. Please make checks out to: Concord UMC. You may place your request for a Dedication in the offering plate on Sunday mornings, or by coming to the church office during business hours, or mail your Dedication information, including your name and phone number, with payment to: Concord United Methodist Church, PO Box 746, Athens WV 24712.

Concord Church's 150th Anniversary!

On October 19, 2008, Concord Church celebrated our 150th anniversary! The celebration featured a message from guest preacher Bishop Ernest Lyght, entitled "Life in Christ," based on Colossians 2:6-23. Also present were former pastors Maurice Miller, K Almond, and Kevin Gooding, as well as Superintendent Helen Oates and about 140 current and former members and friends. Our celebration dinner was held at Concord University and was an enjoyable time of fellowship sponsored by the Rachel Myers Circle. Thanks for the great efforts of all who made the celebration of Athens' Historic Community Church a success!
